The Doctor and the Saint, 2017

Arundhati Roy’s book brings out the divide in views of B.R Ambedkar and M.K Gandhi on caste. The cover highlights the polarising nature of her commentary on the debate between the two, supporting Ambedkar’s position. Accordingly, the single line is a stark reflection of the divide; but it draws Ambedkar’s profile alone.

Sab Likhni Kai Likhu Sansaara: Padmavat aur Jaysi Ki Duniya, 2018

This book by Mujib Rizavi is an analysis of all the works of Malik Muhammad Jayasi, creating a context for Sufi literature through the writings of Jayasi. Jayasi wrote in Hindavi, though Padmawat has been translated into Urdu more than once. Jayasi’s sources are Persian and Arabic, fitted into a local context. The bi-lingual title with calligraphic fonts points to the conversation and flow of ideas between Hindi literature and Islamicate sources.

Goras and Desis, 2016

Omkar Goswami’s book documents the rise of the ‘managing company’ an entirely indigenous forerunner of the modern limited liability corporation or ‘company’ that we know today, and its journey from the colonial times to the present day. The cover illustration capitalises on the title, animating an academic book.

Last Jet Engine Laugh, 2003

This book by Ruchir Joshi tells a tale spread across three generations of love, water shortages, and historical figures. The cockpit and its instrument panel playfully depict incidents that reveal themselves as the reader hurtles through the book; like a jet flying over Calcutta, Kolkata, and the decades. Flying Durga and all.

Looking Through Glass, 1995

Set in pre-independence India this novel by Mukul Keshavan tells the tale of a young photographer as he tries to find his footing in an unfamiliar setting and time. The jigsaw puzzle on the cover portrays his struggle to look for answers and avert the inevitable partition of India and the disruption of the lives of people around him.

Anita Desai book series, 2003

This collection of books cover was commissioned by Random House for a reprint. The extensive quotes signify the iconic status of the author, being republished long after they achieved fame. The faded illustration style reflects the mellow, meditative quality of Anita Desai’s wistful prose.
